Couple steals 15 bunches of plantain

Kwabena Nimo, a farmer, who teamed up with his pregnant wife, Afua Asaaba, to steal 15 bunches of plantain worth GH¢150 from a plantation at Agona Asafo, is  being hunted by the police, while his wife is facing trial at the Agona Swedru District Magistrate’s Court.
Nimo is being sought by the police after the court, presided over by Mr Kwaku Baah Frempong, has ordered his arrest.

However, Asaaba, who pleaded not guilty, has been granted GH¢500 bail with one surety to appear later.

Police Sergeant Emmanuel Agbafe, the prosecutor said Mr Seth Asamoah was the caretaker of USAI Farms Company at Agona Asafo, the owners of the plantation, whereas Asaaba was a trader. Both of them reside at Agona Asafo.

According to the prosecutor, Asamoah has, for some time now, been experiencing frequent thefts at the plantation.

He said at about 4 am on August 5, 2013, Asamoah spotted Asaaba in a taxi heading towards the plantation and immediately asked two men, Yaw Nyarko and Kwabena Attah, to join him to look out for the taxi and its occupants.

Sergeant Agbafe said some minutes later the taxi returned and the ambushed men signalled it to stop. When the taxi was searched the team found out that it had been loaded with some bunches of plantain with Nimo and Asaaba on board.

According to Sergeant Agbafe, when the taxi driver was ordered by the team to drive to the police station, Nimo pleaded for an amicable settlement.

Sgt Agbafe said while the case was being reported to some policemen at a barrier, Nimo fled the scene leaving Asaaba behind.

Asaaba, according to the prosecutor, claimed that the plantain was harvested by Nimo from his own farm but she could not accompany the police to the said farm.
