Coronavirus: Gonjaland Youth Association donates to Old Fadama residents

The leadership of the Gonjaland Youth Association has donated assorted food items to residents of the Gonja community at Old Fadama in the Greater Accra Region.

The items, rice, cooking oil, sugar, biscuits and tomato paste, were meant to support the residents, particularly those of Gonja and Kokomba origins, during the 14-day restrictions in movement in Accra.

The association also educated the residents on COVID-19 and how to prevent one from being infected by the virus.

Rationale

The President of the association, Mr Mohammed Amin Osman, said the gesture formed part of the association’s drive to ensure that the Gonja indigenes of the area were safe.

He said since the restrictions came into force, there had been reports of people of northern origin, particularly those engaged in the ‘kaya’ (head porters) business, trying to travel back to their communities in an inhumane manner.

He explained that many of such people undertook such journeys because of lack of access to some basic needs such as food to enable them to stay indoors during the period.

According to Mr Osman, many people were flouting the regulation on the restrictions in movement because they did not have food to eat.

He said the association, therefore, decided to provide the food items for the less privileged ones of northern origin at Old Fadama so that they would not be tempted to travel back to their various communities in northern Ghana.

Mr Osman admonished all those of northern descent who had plans of going back to their communities not to engage in such practice as it could help spread the disease further.

He commended the Savannah Regional Minister for his contribution towards the gesture and called on other well-to-do Gonja citizens to help their less fortunate brothers and sisters during the restriction of movement.

Education

A pharmacist and lawyer with the Ministry of Health, Alhaji Inna Yusuf, and Dr Hanifa Alhassan of the Tema General Hospital educated the residents on COVID-19.

They urged them to adhere to the protocols concerning the disease such as staying at home and exercising social distancing in their various localities.

Appreciation

Mr Joseph Jaakpan Akwasi and Mr Dramani Abdulai, who represented the Gonja and Kokomba leadership at Old Fadama, commended the leadership of the Gonjaland Youth Association for the gesture, particularly the education on the coronavirus in the native language of the people.

He pledged that the leadership would ensure fair distribution of the items, asking other benevolent individuals and organisations to follow suit.
