Churches to organise national prayer week

The Christian Council of Ghana, in collaboration with other Christian-based organisations, will organise this year’s National Week of Prayer and Thanksgiving with the aim of de-politicising the event.

For this reason, the funding and planning of the event will be done by the Christian Council and other Christian-based organisations.

In the past, the event had been funded and organised by successive governments.

The National Week of Prayer and Thanksgiving is slated for June 30 to July 6.

Politicisation of past events

The General Secretary of the Christian Council and the National Coordinator of the National Week of Prayer and Thanksgiving, Rev. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, who announced this at a press conference in Accra, also said the organisation and funding of the programme by the government in the past had led to the politicisation of the event by some people.

According to Dr Opuni-Frimpong, ministers of the gospel who had attended the event in the past were tagged as members of the ruling party while others who could not make it to the event were also tagged as members of the opposition parties.

Dr Opuni-Frimpong stated that the decision to ask the Christian organisations plan and fund the programme without government’s involvement was reached at a meeting with the President at the Flagstaff House on March 17, 2014 and added that “a committee was therefore, constituted by the church councils to effect its planning and implementation”.

Itinerary of the event

Briefing the media on the activities for the national week of prayer and thanksgiving, Dr Opuni-Frimpong said  the event would be observed in all communities, districts and regional capitals.

The event, to be patronised by the government, political parties, the judiciary, legislature and the public, will be held on the theme “Bind us together, oh Lord”  and would be climaxed on July 6, 2014 at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka in Accra.

“We also call on members of the clergy across the country to seek platforms on electronic media to offer public prayers for our nation during the week of prayer and thanksgiving”, he said.

Other Christian organisations involved in the planning of the event include the National Catholic Secretariat, the National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches, the Ghana Pentecostal and the Charismatic Council and the Council of Independent Churches.
