A child psychologist and pastor’s wife, Dr Esi Gaisie Tetteh, has authored a book entitled “Heart Wrenching Marriages: From Surviving to Thriving (When Divorce is not an option).”

The book, which addresses issues of marital difficulties and how they could be turned into a more enjoyable marriage in the Ghanaian society, is based on a report by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) that about 4,080 divorce cases were recorded in Accra from 2006 to 2014 with more than half of marriages last year ending in divorce.

It, therefore, gives married couples, marriage counsellors, courting couples, pastors and Christians in general tools to deal with challenging issues in marriages and put the necessary measures in place to transform marriage into what God originally meant it to be.

Topics

She writes on topics such as: ‘Marriage has a master plan’, ‘Men and women are different, it matters’, ‘For better or for worse’, ‘The place of love and respect’, ‘Love, vulnerability and forgiveness’ and others.

Launching the book, Dr Tetteh said the book revealed issues in marriages that were often taboos.

She explained that she took inspiration from the police officers and firemen during the September 9:11 disaster and its aftermath, who ran towards the scene giving others guidelines to move away from the danger zone, even though people were running away from the scene.

She said she believed that by tackling the sensitive issues in marriages, she was performing her duty as a servant of God to discourage couples from harbouring bitter feelings and getting offended with issues in marriages and urged them to go on to develop the courage and talk about issues that were often considered as taboos to be discussed in marriage.

Importance

At the launch of the book, a former Head of the Guidance and Counselling Department of the University of Ghana, Rev. John G. Egyir-Croffet, described Dr Tetteh’s book as timely and said it would encourage couples to stay together and detest divorce.

He stressed the quotation in the Bible that says God hates divorce, which hasn’t changed, and added, “If we commit to honouring God in obeying Him and what He has instructed us in His word, even if it is very difficult, He will also see to it that we do not lose His blessings in this life and our ultimate reward in eternity.”

The launch of the book, organised by Innova DDB, Rezultz Advertising and Touchpoint Magna Carta, was on the theme: “A night of the arts”. It saw an art exhibition by abstract artist Comfort Walker and spoken word performances by musician and composer         C-Real.

Copies of the book are available at Evangel bookstores, Liberation Road, near the Sahel Sahara Bank in Takoradi and at Josiah Court, Ecomog, near Maabey, Haatso in Accra.
