Case of Delta Force 13 adjourned to May 18

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court today adjourned to May 18, 2017 the case involving 13 members of the Delta Force who have been accused of forcing out and vandalising the office of the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator in Kumasi.

Unlike previous appearance, there was no breach of security by the supporters of the 13. In court to show solidarity with them were the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr Sammy Awuku and Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr Henry Nana Boakye.

Immediately the case was called, the prosecutor, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Okyere Darko, informed the court that the Attorney General has expressed interest in the case and had called for the docket for study and would therefore plead with the court to adjourn the case till the prosecution receives advice from the AG’s office.

On his part, the counsel for the 13, Mr Matthew Appiah, pleaded with the court presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyire to give a longer period for the adjournment.

The judge acquiesced to the application by both the defense and the prosecution and accordingly adjourned the case to May 18.

First appearance

On March 24, 2017, when Mrs Nsenkyire remanded the 13 into prison custody, some of their supporters who were within the precincts, stormed the courtroom and aided the 13 to escape lawful custody.

The 13 later reported themselves to the police the same day and were later fined Ghc2, 400 each and made to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for escaping or in default, serve three years and two jail terms respectively by Circuit Court Five.

They were later granted bail by a Kumasi High Court on the first charges.
