Walewale: Cargo truck kills two people

Two people died Tuesday night in Walewale in the North East Region, when a truck veered off its lane and run over them at the market area.

Three others got injured in the accident and are receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

An eyewitness, in a radio interview monitored by Graphic Online said that the accident involved a Kia truck which was loaded and was heading towards the Bolgatanga side on the main road.

The driver reportedly lost control as a result of a brake failure according to the eyewitness.

One of the victims according to the eyewitness died instantly and the other died later.

Graphic Online's Mohammed Fugu reported from Walewale that three of the injured persons were in a critical condition at the hospital (TTH).

Walewale is the capital of the West Mamprusi Municipality.

The vehicle with registration number GR 6052-17 which was loaded with goods was said to be heading towards the Walewale market from the municipal hospital road direction when the brakes reportedly failed and run into other vehicles, which had been parked by the roadside.

The West Mamprusi Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Mr Samuel Yeboah told Graphic Online that the police arrived at the accident scene to discover that one person had died on the spot.

He said four persons who sustained various degree of injury were rushed to the hospital by the National Ambulance Service, but one died on the way to the hospital.

Chief Superintendent Yeboah said a preliminary investigation has revealed that upon reaching the market, the brakes of the truck failed and the driver lost control and run into stationary vehicles by the road side.
