C-Poly students boycott lectures

Students of Cape Coast Polytechnic have vowed to boycott lectures until some positive action is taken to include the institution in the first batch of polytechnics to be converted into technical universities.

The boycott, which started last Monday, is to protest against the non-inclusion of the polytechnic in the first list of polytechnics selected to be converted into technical universities.

The students, who wore red arm bands, vowed that they would only return to class if “we see any action to include us in the first list.”

When the Daily Graphic visited the campus yesterday, students were seen in groups discussing the boycott and related issues.

SRC

The SRC President, Mr Selorm Ahiagba, told the Daily Graphic that “ We are continuing until we see an action coming our way.”

Appeal

The management of the Polytechnic later met the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to impress upon them to resume lectures while the situation is being addressed but the students were adamant and said they would only resume if the institute was included in the selection.

The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Mr Michael Magnus Bentil, acknowledged receiving a petition from the SRC to the effect that students would boycott classes until the school was converted.

He said he asked them to go back to class to begin the academic work while the issue was being resolved.

Mr Bentil acknowledged that when the technical committee first visited the institute, it was observed that “we have challenges with governance structure and workshops.

He said since after the assessment there was massive improvement in the structures with the appointment of fully qualified people to man the various departments of the institute.

He said the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) had been happy with “our laboratory and pledged to partner with us. I am of the hope that after the re-assessment, we shall be converted.”
