Bring Dagbon chieftaincy dispute to finality

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to the three eminent chiefs mediating in the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute to do all they can to help resolve the 15-year-old chieftaincy dispute.

The conflict, he said, was retarding development in the area.

The three eminent chiefs are the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II; the Paramount Chief of Mamprugu, Nayiri Na Bohagu Mahami Sheriga, and the Yagbonwura, Tumtumba Boresa.

The President made the appeal when he paid a courtesy call on the Nayiri at his palace at Nalerigu in the East Mamprusi District to start his three-day tour of the Northern Region.

According to the President, it was time to bring the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute to a finality to pave way for lasting peace and the accelerated development of the area.

President Nana Akufo-Addo stated that the government was ready to assist the revered chiefs to bring to finality the crisis to make Dagbon take up its past glory as one of the respected kingdoms.

The Nayiri, during the courtesy call on him by the President, appealed to the latter to use his good offices to help resolve the chieftaincy conflict in Yendi and Bimbilla to bring about development.

On the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, President Nana Akufo-Addo noted that just as with the implementation of any novelty programme, there was bound to be challenges.

He cited the issues of infrastructure such as dormitories and classrooms as some of the challenges that greeted the implementation of the Free SHS policy but he gave an assurance that the government was on top of the issues to address them.

Water/Electricity

The President announced that the government had provided $45.7 million to rehabilitate the water systems in Nalerigu, Gambaga and Walewale in the East and West Mamprusi districts to address the acute water shortage experienced by the people in the area during the dry season.

He stated further that 447 communities within the three northern regions with some in the East Mamprusi District had been earmarked for connection to the national grid to further open up the beneficiary areas for more commercial activities and economic development.

Upgrading of districts/creation of new district

President Akufo-Addo also announced that six districts in the region, including the East Mamprusi and West Mamprusi districts which have Gambaga and Walewale as their capitals respectively would be upgraded into municipalities, while Nanton and Yunyoo that are currently part of the Savelugu-Nanton and the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo municipalities respectively will be carved out of the existing district into separate districts.

The President added that the government supported the demand of the creation of the new districts and the regions by the people and would bring them into fruition to speed up the socio-economic development of the beneficiary areas and the entire country

Rousing welcome

The President received a rousing welcome from schoolchildren and residents of Walewale, the capital of the West Mamprusi District in the Northern Region, at the start of his three -day tour of the Northern Region.

He arrived from the Upper East Region yesterday morning and was met at Walewale by members of the Northern Regional Security Council led by its chairman, Mr Salifu Sa-eed who is also the Northern Regional Minister.

Among those who met the President were functionaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region.

The President would also pay a courtesy call on the overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, Yagbonwura Tumtumba Boresa at his palace in Damongo.

The President as part of his three-day tour of the region which would end on Sunday, October 8, 2017, will also visit Yendi, the traditional capital of the Dagbon state where he is expected to interact with the Regent of Dagbon, the Kampakuya-Na Andani Yakubu Abudulai, the Kpembe Traditional Area, Saboba and some interest groups.
