Blackout hits 4 regions following power trips at Aboadze enclave

There was blackout in parts of the Greater Accra, Western, Ashanti and Central regions following trips of all generation units in the Aboadze power enclave in the Western Region early yesterday morning.

The disruption in power supply was believed to have been caused by a rainstorm.

A terse statement, issued by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) in Accra yesterday, which confirmed the blackout, said: “Currently customers in Northern Ghana, some parts of Accra as well (sic) power disruptions in the transmission lines of the GRIDCo.”

It said engineers had commenced the process of isolating the fault line with the aim of rectifying the problem.

“Supply is expected to be restored as soon as possible,” it added.

Commenting on the problem, the Deputy Minister of Power, Mr John Jinapor, said his attention was drawn to the situation immediately the incident happened.

“Fortunately, they have identified the problem to be from the Tafo-Akwatia main line to solve the challenges,” he said.

Kumasi

From Kumasi, Daniel Kenu reports that parts of the Ashanti Region, especially Kumasi, were plunged into darkness as a result of the power outage.

Prior to the blackout, there were intermittent power outages between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. before power supply was completely cut off around 3 a.m.

However, as of the time of filing this report, Asafo, a suburb of Kumasi, where the Graphic Communications Group office in the metropolis is located, had power.

The central business district at Kejetia was filled with deafening noise from generating sets, while those who did not have power closed their shops as early as 3 p.m.

Sekondi/Takoradi

From the Sekondi/Takoradi metropolis, Dotsey Koblah Aklorbortu reports that power supply to consumers was cut off  about 2.30 a.m.

As of the time of filing this report, power was yet to be restored.

The situation was as a result of all the thermal units at the Aboadze power enclave automatically shutting down to protect itself after the collapse of the major evacuation lines of the GRIDCo.

Cape Coast

Residents of Cape Coast experienced about six hours of power outage from dawn to about 9 a.m. yesterday, writes Shirley Asiedu-Addo from Cape Coast.

While power to some areas, including Holy Child, Ayekoo-Ayekoo, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and Tantri, was restored later, areas such as Kotokuraba, Abura and Jubilee School were yet to be restored to power as of the time of filing this report.

The power outage affected many businesses whose operations depended on electricity.

Many hairdressers in the affected areas, for instance, sat in front of their salons without working.

The Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Mr Isaac Ainooson, said the outage was due to problems with some of GRIDCo’s transmission lines at Aboadze in the Central Region.

He said the ECG was hopeful that the situation would be restored quickly.
