According to the ministry, about 250 of the birds and poultry products have been destroyed following the outbreak of the virus in the farm.

In May 2015, the Greater Accra Region Central Region, Ashanti Region, Western Region and Volta Region recorded about 70, 000 cases of birds and other poultry products been destroyed by the virus.

Confirming the outbreak to Accra based Citi FM, the Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in charge of livestock, Dr Hanna Bisew said the ministry was putting measures in place to curb the virus from spreading.

She said farmers had been restrained from moving from one farm to the other which she said would control the spread of the virus.

She bemoaned smuggling of birds from neighbouring countries who had active traces of the virus in their country.

She said if the general public does not help in the fight, it would be very difficult to control the bird flu virus.

She therefore advised farmers to stop smuggling birds into the country because most of the neighbouring countries had active risk of the outbreak.
