This, according to him, would ensure peace and security and promote peaceful co-existence between the country and other African countries.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh was speaking at a symposium organised by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra last Thursday.  It was on the topic, “Policing in Complex Peacekeeping Environment.”

The event was an educational programme for troops yet to be deployed from Ghana and other African countries to keep the peace in war-torn areas in the sub-region.

“Ghana must not pay deaf ears to calls for security assistance,” he said and intimated that conflict in a country signaled its neighbours to the need to institute measures to forestal same.

He cautioned Ghanaians to be security conscious and report unusual characters to the security agencies.

Sources of conflict

The source of conflict in most African countries, particularly Sudan, could be traced to socio-economic problems such as access to electricity and potable water.

Conflicts could also be traced to the neglect of citizens by political leaders.

Policing challenges in war-torn areas

Touching on the challenges of policing in conflict areas, COP Oppong-Boanuh said, often, troops were killed for no reason.

He told the participants that language was a barrier in policing during peacekeeping.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh, who is experienced in peacekeeping, said intense education about wars and their repercussions was the way forward  to ensure political stability.
