The newly appointed MCE said the perennial flooding in the area is due to the lack of proper use of land, stressing that residents build on waterways, blocking the easy flow of excess waters during heavy downpours.

Ms Edem Attipoe said this after visiting some flooded areas within the municipality following Wednesday’s downpour in the Greater Accra region.

She further called on residents to consult with municipal authorities before embarking on construction projects to prevent flooding and related issues.

Touching on plans to reduce flooding in the area, the MCE  said her office will take on a massive drainage system to contain excess water.

She added that her outfit will also ensure a broken bridge in the area is fixed in the next few days.

“There are issues, homes were flooded and all that. We have decided to come and see and talk to them as well and see the impact….. There are some that we quickly have to take immediate action like the drainage and also hold a town hall meeting to talk to them about how best we can all do the work well” she stated.

"Most of the buildings are not being built by experts. People just get up and start building, and it's causing them problems without permits as well.  We have to do the drainage; some have been built very close to the drainage. So when we do the dredging, where are we even going to put the materials? We need a buffer land for these materials, but these buffer lands are already built on.", she questioned.
