He said a professional conduct by the police would enable the police service to gain the respect and confidence of the community.

Mr Ahwoi made these remarks at the inauguration of a police station at Atomic Hills, Kwabenya, in the Greater Accra Region. It was constructed by the Local Council of Churches at Atomic Hills.

The council consists of churches operating within the Atomic Hills area.

The police station, which was constructed at GH¢ 150,000, has a charge office, a cell and an office for the station commander.

Professional conduct

Mr Ahwoi appealed to the police to desist from taking “gifts” likely to compromise the tenets of the profession and harm its relationship with the public.

He also stated that the police continued to be saddled with challenges despite the government’s effort to adequately resource them. He lauded the efforts of stakeholders who assisted law enforcement agencies to fight crime.

“When communities get involved in police-community initiatives and collaboration, crime rates are reduced. We, therefore, need to step up efforts to encourage more communities to join in fighting crime in our localities,” he said.

Police-community relations

Mr Ahwoi added that the police station was an indication that the community recognised the role of the police in ensuring law and order.

According to Mr Ahwoi, the police station would provide a decent and fitting working environment for the police personnel, adding that the station would also help maintain law and order within surrounding communities.

“By providing this facility, the community expects effective and efficient policing from our police personnel. They expect to have visible and accessible police at a location where locals can seek assistance. More importantly, they expect quick responses to emergencies,” he said.

Regional commander

The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Timothy Yoosah Bonga, commended the Local Council of Churches of the Atomic Hills for their concerted efforts at the maintenance of law and order in their community.

He said the police station would help make the police more visible and bring them closer to members of the community.

“Stronger bonding with the community will undoubtedly promote effective and efficient policing. I am, therefore, encouraging members of the public to continue to avail themselves and support the police in whatever capacity so together we can all enjoy the desired peace, ” he said.
