Out of the target of 1,008,970 children who were expected to be immunised, the directorate succeeded in immunising 1,058,026 children under five years representing an increase of five per cent over the target.

The three-day exercise was undertaken in line with the National Immunisation Day (NID) programme which took place across the country recently.

However, four communities in the Sekyere Afram Plains District were not covered by the immunisation exercise due to flooding in the area during the immunisation period.

The communities with expected children under-five population of over 142 were: Alhaji Akura, Abosrem, Takorase and Esienkyem.

The affected communities would be covered when the rains subside.

Amongst the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the region, the Asante Akim Central Municipality had the highest record of nine per cent above its target, followed by Kwabre East with six per cent above its target, while the Asokore Mampong District had the lowest coverage of 74 per cent of its target.

He commended the various stakeholders for their support and effort which led to the gains and urged them to continue the good work aimed at promoting quality healthcare delivery to the people.

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of Immunisation, Mr Asubonteng Afriyie, for his part, said the major challenge that confronted the region during the exercise was the difficulty of getting volunteers to support the exercise in ‘galamsey’ operation areas.
