Under the agreement, the School of Hygiene will provide technical support and personnel at specific times of the year as requested by the AMA.

Some of the students of the school will be posted to the AMA for practical attachment and others engaged in data collection during research projects by both institutions.

The AMA will provide logistic support for programmes and services and also establish a Mayor’s chair to provide awards for deserving and hard-working students, tutors and cleanest communities through competitive sanitary assessment.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the AMA, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, said with the current Accra population of five million, wa

“This is a huge challenge facing the metropolis, given its inadequate human resource,” he said. On the generation of liquid waste, Mr Vanderpuije said the metropolis generated more than 10,000 cubic metres daily, hence the need to have environmental health officers (EHOs) to complement the efforts of the assembly in managing waste in the city.

He urged the students to take advantage of the MoU to change the face of Accra, while improving their theoretical and practical knowledge about the environment.

MoU laudable

The Principal of the Accra School of Hygiene, Mr Henry Nartey Adipah, assured the AMA of the school’s commitment to the MoU to ensure that the objectives of a clean city and promoting the health of the people of Accra were achieved.

He appealed to corporate bodies to support the school in its endeavour to establish practical community services in the area of pest and vector control.
