The facility, provided by Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL), has the capacity to provide clean and potable water to more than 25,000 inhabitants of Akomade and its surrounding areas.

It has a storage capacity of 65,000 litres per day and could supply clean water to about 30,000 inhabitants of a community daily.

Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, the Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, Ms Preba Greenstreet, emphasised the company’s passionate desire to support deprived communities.

She said GGBL and the Diageo Foundation, the parent company, had jointly sponsored nine water facilities across the country over the last two years with the Akomade Centre being the tenth.

Akomade contribution to GGBL

Ms Greenstreet said Akomade was selected as a beneficiary because of the raw material GGBL obtained from there for the production of its Ruut Extra Premium Beer.

She noted that the fact that Ghana failed to meet the Millennium Development Goal sanitation target called for a collective effort for all stakeholders to work together in addressing issues of sanitation in the country.

According to Ms Greenstreet, GGBL was committed to ensuring that deprived communities received the best of assistance, adding that the company was working with the relevant ministries to bring that dream to fruition.

The Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Agyei, commended GGBL and its parent company for providing the facility to the residents of Akomade.

He said although the provision of potable water contributed to the quality of health of the people, it was not enough to ensure a cholera-free or diarrhoea-free community.

“We need to do our part by keeping our towns clean. Indiscriminate disposal of waste and other related behaviours must stop,” he said.
