Eleven villages in the Agona East District in the Central Region have been connected to the national grid through the efforts of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the district which doubles as a constituency, Miss Queenstar Pokuah Sawyerr.
The villages include Agona Ninta, Mansofo, Mankrong Nkwanta, Namanwora, Teacher Okine and Diborase. The 11 villages are out of 17 targeted by the MP to connect to the national grid.
All the villages went gay, expressing their gratitude to the MP for being the channel through whom President John Mahama had fulfilled one major campaign promise he made to the people.
In almost all the villages, where Miss Sawyerr, who doubles as the Deputy Central Regional Minister, went to inaugurate the electricity projects, the people mobbed her such that at some point it took the minister’s security detail to restrain the people to carry her shoulder-high.
The inauguration ceremonies were undertaken over three days and they took the form of durbars at which the MP assured the people of President Mahama’s resolve to improve conditions of living to make the country a better place to live in.
“The president would surely fulfil his promises to you and the rest of Ghanaians,” Miss Sawyerr, who is popularly known as Maame Pokuah in her constituency, told the people.
At Agona Ninta last Tuesday, the MP and deputy minister specifically stated that “those villages which do not have light should contact my special assistant and surely, you will be served too”.
The chief of the village, Nana Essel Koranteng Ababio III, thanked Maame Pokuah and President Mahama for the electricity extended to his and other villages.
“We have waited for over 50 years for this and today we have it. We thank you both but bring the other promises to make us happier,” he said.
