AG asks for more time to study docket of Delta Force 13

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyire, yesterday adjourned to June 15, 2017 the case involving 13 members of the Delta Force, a vigilante group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This was after the prosecutor, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Asomadu Okyere-Darko, prayed for adjournment as the prosecution awaits advice from the Attorney-General’s (A-G’s) office.

“My Lord, I am praying for a new date because the docket is still with the Attorney-General’s office,” he pleaded, to which the court agreed.

After some consultations, the judge adjourned the case to June 15.

All the 13 persons were in court yesterday. They include Salu Issakah, Akwasi Owusu, Kwabena Owusu, Kofi Kyei, Agya Boadu, Salu Yussif, Yussif Salu and Kwaku Awotwe.

The rest are Kwadwo Fosu Bamba, Awal Sadat, Abukakar Sidiq Abdul Hameed, Jamil Issah and Hamza Mohammed.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, assault of a public officer, causing unlawful damage and preventing a public officer from performing his lawful duty.

The 13 Delta Force members were arrested for forcing the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator out of his office and for destroying property in his office at the Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi.

At the previous sitting, the prosecutor announced to the court that the docket had been forwarded to the A-G’s office for advice.

On April 6, 2017, the KMA Circuit Court remanded the 13 persons in custody and this infuriated their supporters who were outside the court, leading to some of them storming the court to release the accused from lawful custody.

The 13 Delta Force members reported themselves to the police and they were put before court for absconding from lawful custody.

They pleaded guilty to the charges and the Circuit Court Four fined them a total of GH¢31, 200.

The 13, who were then on remand, were also made to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for six months or in default go to the coolers for two years.

Each was fined 200 penalty units which translated into GH¢ 2,400, totalling GH¢31, 200 or in default three years in jail.
