Adjen Kotoku gets new chief

 Nii Ayi Bonte II (left), Gbese Mantse  embraces Nii Aklerkwei III, the newly enstooled chief of Adjen Kotoku Kwarteman,  after administering the oath of allegiance to him at Gbese Blohum, at James Town in Accra.A 49-year-old Director of Environment at Goldfields Ghana Limited, Tarkwa, Mr Benedict Aklerkwei, has been sworn in as the new chief of Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region under the stool name of Nii Aklerkwei III.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Environment Resource Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of science and Technology (KNUST).

A colourful ceremony was held at the forecourt of the Gbese Clan house at Ga Mashie in Accra last Saturday to formally swear in the new chief and at the same time introduce his elders to the Gbese Traditional Council.

The chief and his elders  presented to the council assorted drinks, a big ram and an undisclosed amount of money as custom demanded.

After the swearing in ceremony, which was done amidst pomp and pageantry, Nii Aklerkwei III pledged his allegiance to the Gbese stool and thanked the Gbese Mantse for his advice and guidance. He also promised to work hard to enable  Adjen Kotoku regain its lost status, adding that he would make himself  available anytime he was called upon.

He expressed his gratitude to the people for the confidence reposed in him and appealed to them to unite and be truthful to one another.He further asked the people to co-exist peacefully and contribute meaningfully to the development of the town.

Nii Aklerkwei III noted that he had taken the Gbese Mantse as his father, and was prepared to liaise with the traditional council to help bring development to the area and the Ga Traditional Area at large.

The Gbese Mantse  Nii Ayi Bonte, welcomed the chief and his elders to the traditional council and advised the new chief to be loyal to the clan and be accountable to the paramount chief and his elders. He also advised the new chief to report to the council any challenges he might encounter.

During the swearing in ceremony, a ram was slaughtered and the blood smeared on Mr Aklerkwei’s feet marked the final traditional rites of his enstoolment.

The new chief is married to Mrs Angela Addo and they are blessed with eight children, including a set of triplet.

The colourful ceremony brought together various Ga chiefs, linguists, queen mothers, fetish priests and people from far and near.
