Adamus Resources Limited, a subsidiary of Endeavour Mining Corporation in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region has provided a community-based health planning services (CHPS) compound and staff accommodation for the people of Kikam and its environs.
The provision of the facility is to augment the government’s effort in providing quality healthcare and to show its commitment to the people in its operational area.
At the ceremony to hand over the facility to the community, the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, commended the company for its interest in the communities it operates.
He said the provision of the health facility had come at a time that mining companies were going through challenges which had strained them financially.
“That not withstanding, the company found it prudent to respond to the request from the people to provide the health facility,” he said.
He urged the district health directorate to ensure that personnel were posted to manage the facility with all the needed support to promote health delivery in the area in the district.
The CHPS compound, he said, was very important in reducing the pressure on bigger facilities in the district and regional healthcare facilities, “the absence of facilities such as this makes the gatekeeping system difficult as a result every little issue that could be handled at the CHPS level is carried to the bigger facilities.”
“Again I will call on the personnel that would be posted here to work for the interest of the people and uphold the noble profession of healthcare delivery,” he said.
Support for facilities
Mr Buah, who is also the Minister of Petroleum, pledged his support for the facilities in the constituency and disclosed that plans were far advanced for the commencement of work on Kikam roads as a facelift for easy commuting in the area.
The Vice President, Operations of Endeavour Mining Corporation, Mr Tom Rinaldi, pointed out that the company decided to support in the provision of the health facility because it fell in line with its sustainable plan.
As a business entity, he said, both the community and the District Assembly showed great commitment to the initiative for the benefit of the people.
The facility which comprises delivery ward, Out Patients’ Department (OPD), consulting rooms, recovery ward and two housing units for staff was a collaborative effort of Adamus Resources and its contractors - MAXAM, African Mining Services and ZEN Petroleum.
Mr Rinaldi said he was optimistic the health facility would benefit Kikam and its surrounding communities and therefore, appealed to the assembly to see to its maintenance.
The District Chief Executive of Ellembelle, Mr Daniel K. Eshun thanked Adamus Resources for responding to the request and making the provision of a health facility in Kikam Community a reality.
He said the move by Adamus Resources had complimented the government’s effort in bringing healthcare services to the doorsteps of the people.
He indicated that the preliminary efforts by the District Assembly in proving 100 bags of cement was a way of showing the Assembly’s commitment and readiness for development and pledged that the Assembly will support, monitor and ensure that the facility is well kept.
Mr Eshun said the District Assembly would continue to partner Adamus Resources for such development projects in the District.
