The Ada College of Education at Ada Foah has honoured Mr David Cephas Sottie, the immediate past Principal of the school, for his immense contribution to the school.
Mr Sottie, who was popularly referred to as DCO, retired last month. He had taught for 37 years and had had stints at the Ada Senior High School, the Ashaiman Senior High School, the Ada Technical Institute and the Ada College of Education, where he was Vice Principal for 15 years.
He went on to become the District Director Education for the Yilo Krobo District in the Eastern Region and the Dangme East District (now the Ada East and Ada West districts) in the Greater Accra Region before he moved to head the Ada College of Education.
Mr Sottie was among a number of personalities honoured during a graduation ceremony on the school’s campus at Ada Foah, where 161 final year students of the college were awarded degrees.
Mr Agbovi Edmond Teye obtained a first class degree, while 24 other students were awarded degrees in the second class upper division, 69 in the second class lower division and 61 in the third class division. Six students had passes.
Prof. Edward Adjesiwor Obodai of the University of Cape Coast, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the university, conferred Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) certificates on the newly trained teachers.
The Guest Speaker for the occasion was Prof. Mahama Duwiedjua, who is the Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE). He said the level of recognition and respect that the public accorded teachers was in direct proportion to the high academic and moral standards of students placed in their care, as well as the quality of knowledge they imparted and the general attitude put up by the teacher.
He advised the newly trained teachers to prepare adequately for each lesson, make effective use of the full duration for each lesson, avoid unnecessary interruptions in the classroom and practise the act of self-assessment periodically to see how they were performing.
