Achimota Rotary Club launches 30th anniversary

The Rotary Club of Accra-Achimota is to rehabilitate the Anlo-Afiadenyigba Health Centre in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region to commemorate its 30th anniversary celebrations.

The major works of the project will be the renovation of the dilapidated structure which has been estimated to cost GH¢50,000.

Already, the club has activated its fundraising events to raise the needed resources for the project which will complement the Keta Municipal Hospital to improve healthcare delivery for more than 147,000 people.

Other programmes to mark the three decades of existence of the club include career guidance for selected senior high schools, a blood donation exercise, an educational and literacy project as well as the provision of water and sanitation facilities in Ayensuano in the Eastern Region.

At the launch of the celebrations in Accra, the President of the club, Mr Richmond Worgba, said through the commemoration, the club was looking forward to celebrating fellowship, developing Rotary clubs, communities and impacting society.

Achievements

Cataloguing some of the club’s achievements since 1989, he said it had built schools, donated books and contributed to promoting health care across the country.

The club’s footprints include the renovation and supply of equipment to the Assessment and Resource Centre for Children at Achimota in Accra; the construction of the Samsam Community Clinic with the support of the Rotary Foundation and Rotary Club of Hawai in the United States; the donation of books to Dome Junior High School, Dzorwulu Special School and the Anlo Awoamefia School.

He said as part of activities, the Awoamefia Torgbui Sri III would be inducted as a honorary member of the club at the upcoming Hogbetsotso Festival.

Rotary not occultic

He discredited what he described as myths that the Rotary Club was a cult, saying the club was just the gathering of business and other professionals interested in doing good.

“There is nothing secret about us. Rotary is open but the fact is to become a member, you have to be invited. We do a lot of background checks before people are inducted,” he said.

He said the main challenge of the club was that because people had the perception that it was a secret society, corporate entities shied away from funding its projects.

Mr Worgba, therefore, urged the public to ignore such perceptions as the club was more about impacting communities positively and had nothing secret about its activities.

Commendation

Torgbui Sri commended Rotary for its great works in communities, which he observed, were improving the lives of deprived people.

He expressed gratitude to the club for honouring him with an invitation to grace the launch of its 30th anniversary and pledged to join the club as it sought to promote community development.

A past District Governor of the Rotary Club, Mr Sam Worentetu, urged the club to be driven by effective vision.

“Quality service, responsiveness and constant creation of new humanitarian services, even for the most basic human needs, are the essence of Rotary’s relevance to the society and has high odds of success over time.

The vision that will be effective in the society emphasises the creation of enduring local capabilities that will allow Rotary to serve better,” he said.
