A statement signed by the Director of the Public Relations Directorate of the GAF, Colonel Aggrey Quashie, said the soldiers were tried by a disciplinary board in accordance with GAF regulations.

According to the statement, Cpl Mensah was sentenced to 60 days’ detention and his rank reduced from corporal to private, while the other four were sentenced to 90 days’ detention with consequential penalties, including the release from the GAF for services no longer required, after serving their sentences.

“The Military High Command wishes to once again assure the general public that under no circumstance will it condone any unprofessional conduct by any member of the GAF,” it said.

The statement assured the public that the zeal with which Operation Vanguard was being prosecuted would be maintained and it would not in any way be affected by the incident involving the five soldiers.
