10% daily wage increase reflects fiscal responsibility – Dr Sharif Khalid
The Economic Policy Adviser to the Vice-President, Dr Sharif Mahmud Khalid, has stated that the 10 percent increase in the daily wage reflects the government's commitment to fiscal responsibility while addressing the needs of workers.
“This is a prudent step by the President and his team of ministers who are relevant to this cause,” Dr Khalid added, stressing the importance of careful financial planning and management.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, February 20, Dr Khalid commended the government’s decision to approve the 10 per cent wage increase, describing it as a well-calculated and responsible move.
He emphasised the strategic planning behind the decision and highlighted the positive response from labour unions, underscoring the careful balance between economic management and worker welfare.

“What has been happening is that if you look at 10%, it tells you it’s a prudent government. We have a fund programme that we are managing. So you don’t need to jump the gun to do this, and the acceptance of labour unions to this 10% rise tells you the sort of embrace they’ve given it,” he stated.
