Universities urged to consider Open Education Resource

Universities in Ghana have been urged to consider the Open Education Resources (OER) more seriously to bring education closer to the door steps of the ordinary person.

Madam Isabelle Turmaine, International Association of Universities (IAU) Director of Information Centre and Communication Services, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the ongoing IAU first validation workshop for Anglophone Africa in Accra.

She said OER was freely accessible online and provides information that was useful for teaching, learning, educational, assessment and research purposes.

Madam Turmaine said IAU aimed at giving expression to the obligation of universities and other higher education institutions as social institutions.

She noted that the Association contributed through international cooperation to the development of material and moral assistance for the strengthening of higher education.   

Madam Turmaine said the IAU sought to enhance the development of OER in African Universities and to give credence to the role of academic libraries in OER.

She said the main challenges facing the Association were the lack of adequate funding and getting universities to adopt the concept of OER.
