Training students in wood technology: Appiah-Menka varsity, company sign MoU

The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MOFCO Company Limited, a wood manufacturing company based at Ejisu to train skilled manpower for the industry.

Under the agreement, MOFCO would serve as a training ground for the students of the university to sharpen their skills and provide the space for practical training for the students, particularly those in wood technology.

The two institutions would also collaborate for research, professional development and capacity building for their members.

Skilled labour

At the signing ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Frederick Sarfo, said the agreement with MOFCO was in line with the mission and objective of the university to train the needed skilled labour for the market.

He said it would provide the students with the opportunity to put their skills to use and also learn new skills related to the industry.

He said the main objective of the university was to train Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) teachers who would train the middle level manpower needed for the development of the country.

According to him, the mission was to train graduates who would set up their own businesses and employ others thereby reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of MOFCO, Mr Kofi Akowuah Kyei, said the company had been in existence for more than two decades and produced quality furniture that “is even exported outside the country.”

He said one observation he had made about those into wood works in the country was that they lacked good finishing skills.

He said since his company had over the years perfected that aspect, the MoU would create a learning platform where that knowledge would be imparted to the students to also improve on their finishing skills and also produce wood works that could meet international standards.

He was, therefore, grateful to the university for the collaboration to improve on the wood technology in the country.
