Teaching is service to humanity — very rev. aryeetey

The Somanya District Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church, Very Rev. Alfred N. O. Aryeetey, has advised teachers to see their profession as service to humanity and not only for monetary gains.

He said the difference between the present generation of teachers and those of the olden days was that the latter taught for prestige, while the former mostly did it for money.

Rev. Aryeetey, who is a retired teacher gave an example of how students he taught in the 1970s looked for him occasionally, just to say thank you as result of the effective way he handled them.

The superintendent minister gave the advice in a short exhortation on the theme, “Teaching is a call”, at a get- together organised by the Yilo Krobo Municipal Education Directorate at Somanya.

He said the teaching profession was a call that needed dedication, devotion and commitment, and those who entered the profession should exhibit those qualities.

He said teachers, by their training, were role models who should lead exemplary lives for the children they taught to emulate but expressed regret that most teachers of today had thrown the moral aspect away and doing what was morally wrong, and as such some of the pupils they taught innocently and ignorantly copied them.

Rev. Aryeetey urged student teachers from Mt Mary College of Education, Somanya, who were part of the programme, to watch their moral lives as teachers who would be helping the young ones when they completed the course.

“As student teachers who will come out soon to teach the young ones, let your conscience judge you in whatever you do and know that someone is watching you,” he said.

The Municipal Director of Education, Madam Theresa Adarkwah, in her goodwill message, praised hard- working heads, teachers and other educational workers in the municipality, and warned the lazy and habitual absentee teachers to desist from such attitudes or face the sanctions of the Ghana Education Service.
