Services Primary, JHS mark 70th anniversary

One of the first schools to be established at a military base, Services Primary and Junior High School, last Saturday climaxed its 70th anniversary celebrations with a grand durbar that attracted the top brass of the Military High Command and other dignitaries at Burma Camp.

Present at the ceremony were the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa, Deputy Minister of Defence, Major Derrick Oduro(retd), and a Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei.

The event, held on the theme “Celebrating 70 years of Quality Education and Complete Human Development”, was also attended by hundreds of old students as well as former head teachers  of the school.

As part of the event, former headmistresses, including the first Ghanaian headmistress of the school, Mrs Theodora Alberta Quartey, were honoured.

High standards

Lieutenant General Akwa lauded the school for producing many leaders in different fields throughout its 70 years of existence.

The school, he said, was an institution that had set the standards in discipline and hard work, saying “I am impressed with the high standards exhibited in all aspects of the school’s activities.’’

He said the school was one of the reasons why civilians continued to have trust and confidence in the armed forces, pointing out that the “Military High Command considers education as critical to national development and will therefore support all educational institutions in the barracks.”

We need support

The Headmistress of the school, Ms Ernestina Nyarko, said despite the success stories of the school, it still faced numerous challenges that required urgent attention.

“Currently, our computer laboratory has just 22 functioning computers.

The school will need about 100 computers for the students to be fully involved in ICT education,’’ he said.

She praised the teachers and non-teaching staff for their selfless sacrifice in moulding the students into responsible and future leaders

History about the school

Services Primary and JHS was established in 1948 by the British Canadian Joint Services Team to cater for the education of officers from  Britain, Canada and Pakistan who were then working with the Gold Coast Armed Forces.

In the 1960s Ghanaian officers were allowed to enrol their children in the school while the first Ghanaian headteacher was appointed in 1970.

Currently the school has a student population of 958 made up of children of both military officers and civilians.
