Sekondi College gets new board

A-13-member Board of Governors with a former Western Regional Director of Education, Mrs Rebecca Afiba Dadzie, as the chairperson, has been appointed for the Sekondi College.

The new board, which will serve a three-year term, was inaugurated at the school over the weekend.

They were sworn in by a Supervising High Court Judge, Justice Mrs Hannah Taylor, who administered the oath of office, allegiance and secrecy.

Members

Other members of the board include the Metro Director of Education, Rev. Mrs Elizabeth Akuoku; the Headmistress of the college, Mrs Guddy A. Ampomah Kermah; Assistant Headmaster, Mr Kingsley Yankey; a representative of the Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Mercy Quashie, and an official representing historic interest, Nana Kofi Abuna V.

The rest are a legal interest representative, Mr Samuel A. Adinkra; the old students representatives, Mrs Adwoa Munkua Dako and Dr Dan Amoah, while the non-teaching and staff representatives are Mr Nyarkoh Asare-Kane and Mr Samuel Adinkra, respectively.

In an address, Justice Taylor urged the board members to be diligent and conscientious in the task ahead.

She encouraged them to bring their managerial skills and experiences to bear on their role to place the college on a high pedestal.

Set benchmarks

The Regional Director of Education, Mrs Agyeibea Okai, lauded efforts of the outgoing board and the sacrifices of members to advance the cause of the college.

She tasked the new board to bring its expertise to bear on achieving quality education delivery towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal Four.

Mrs Okai urged the board to define its roles and assist the management to instil discipline in the students as a benchmark for higher academic laurels.

She said the board would be required to submit an annual report to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service on the state of the college.

The Headmistress, Mrs Ampomah Kermah, also commended the outgoing board for its sacrifices and noble efforts to ensure the well-being of the school.

She said established in 1951, “the Sekondi College is poised to excel and is proud to have trained distinguished scholars serving in high positions at various levels in the country.”

The new chairperson of the board, on behalf of the members, was grateful for the trust and confidence reposed in them, and gave an assurance of their commitment to continue with the good work started by their predecessors.

Outgoing board

The Chairman of the outgoing board and a former Metro Director of Education, Mr Ayyub M. Morgan, congratulating the new board, also said it would be confronted with the challenges of the Free Senior High School and coronavirus (COVID-19) impact and encouraged it to be pragmatic.

Mr Morgan indicated that his team contributed to the vision of the college through higher academic standards, discipline, infrastructural projects, sports, and agriculture, among others.

He commended the old students association, the GES, and other stakeholders, for their support in the smooth running of the college.

College’s needs

The Omanhene of the Mpohor Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwaw Entsie II, who chaired the function, said the college was in dire need of a generator, a new dormitory, fence wall, and toilet facilities to meet their ever-increasing demands.
