Science model school begins at Jachie-Pramso

The first-ever Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy in the country is to begin next academic year at Jachie-Pramso in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

The model, STEM boarding academy, would involve the training of pupils to major strictly in the STEM areas of education so that they would be able to pursue the various sciences as they move up the educational ladder.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, who announced this, explained that the school, which would operate from the kindergarten to junior high school (JHS) level would ensure that many pupils in the district had the opportunity to study the sciences.

Dr Adutwum announced this at Kuntanase when he handed over a 28-seater Coaster bus to the staff and management of the Saint George’s Catholic Senior High/Technical School at Kuntanase in the district.

The bus, donated by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GetFund), is to help the students to be mobile and participate fully in co-curricular activities such as sports, excursions, field trips among others.

Background

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has on several occasions indicated that as part of the educational reforms being undertaken by his government, he had directed the Ministry of Education and the ministry responsible for Science and Technology to draw up programmes to strengthen and upscale the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) right from the basic level.

Model school

Dr Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, hinted that he had established links with some international and local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to establish the school which would be a model one in the whole country.

He said four of the academies would be established at the Oyoko, Jachie/Pramso, Kuntanase and the Beposo zones to feed the Jachie/Pramso SHS and ensure that many more pupils in the area had access to STEM without having to travel long distances.

Traditional leaders

The Chief Linguist for the Kuntanase Traditional area, Nana Appiah Afari, on behalf of the chiefs, thanked the deputy minister for the boost he had been giving to the development of the district and also commended the Roman Catholic Church for establishing the school whose products are currently working in various capacities in the country.

Nana Afari announced that the traditional council had earmarked 280 acres of land for the new site of the St George’s Senior High/Technical School so it would be able to expand its facilities to admit more students.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Mr Joseph Kwasi Asuming, pledged that the government would fulfil all its campaign promises and urged the people to exercise patience as the government continued to roll out various interventions to promote the nation’s development.
