The Radford University College at East Legon in Accra is to set up a weather forecast station to generate data and analysis to facilitate weather forecasting in the country.

According to the Executive Chairman of the RUC, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, the establishment of the station was part of the university’s corporate social responsibility.

“Radford has facilities for a weather station. These would be installed to generate data and analysis to facilitate weather forecast by the appropriate authorities…to support particularly farmers of this country,” he said.

Nana Sarpong said this at the university’s fifth matriculation to formally admit 536 freshmen and women last Saturday.

Out of the total number admitted, 52 per cent are female with 48 per cent being male.

Sixty-five per cent of the students would be studying science and technology while 35 per cent would study business related courses.

Nana Sarpong said the mandate of the university, among other things, was to produce entrepreneurs who would become business executives of industry or employers.

Admission figures

The President of the RUC, Dr Paul Effah, noted that the admission figures of the university this year confirmed its entry into the higher education landscape.

That, he said, was because the university had met local, national and global criteria for the running of such institutions.

“At the global level, universities are universal institutions that admit students from all over the world. Radford meets this requirement because more than 20 per cent of the students we are matriculating today are foreign students,” he said.

Dr Effah said the matriculants had come to Radford for a purpose, which was to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude that would prepare them for life.

Advice to students

“Please remember that a university is a place where we throw words, ideas, thoughts, knowledge and not stones, blows, tables and chairs.

You are, therefore, enjoined while at Radford to comport yourselves,” he advised.

The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. William Otoo-Ellis, congratulated the fresh students on their admission.

Higher education, he said, sought to equip individuals with specialised problem solving abilities essential to the growth of economies and the development of societies.

“It is, therefore, not surprising that a lot of people are seeking tertiary education, especially university, here in Ghana in order to put them in a better position to contribute their quota to the development of the nation,” he said.
