Parents urged to monitor movements of children

The Nkoranza North District Director of Education,  Mr James Appiah-Kusi, has urged parents to monitor the movements of their children and ensure that they do not mingle with their peers who engage in “wee” smoking, drunkenness, sexual promiscuity and stealing.

He emphasised the need for them to visit the schools regularly and interact with teachers to know the attitudes and behaviours as well as the performances of their children since such practices would enable them to take their education seriously.

Mr Appiah-Kusi was addressing the parents teachers association (PTA) meeting of the Yefriman Senior High School (SHS)  at Yefri in the Nkoranza North District in the Brong Ahafo Region.

He expressed concern about how some schoolchildren from some school communities had abandoned school and left to do “galamsey” gold mining to search for “quick” money.

Mr Appiah-Kusi said it was unfortunate that some of the students were also involved in charcoal burning and as a result there was increasing number of school dropouts in the school communities.

The district director of education called on opinion  leaders of the catchment communities of Yefri to educate parents to enroll their children in the school so as to enhance its population and development.

Yefriman SHS started as a Community day senior high school in the year 2007, under the auspices of the chief of the area, Nana Osei Bonsu Okoforobow II. It was absorbed by the government in 2010, as a boarding institution. It is second to Busunya SHS, which was the first and only SHS  in the district.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Frank Beyuo, complained of the irregular payment of school fees by parents as a major challenge that faced the authorities.

He deplored the attitudes, of some parents who visited the school to plead for extension of time to recover the fees but in the end failed to fulfil their promises.

He mentioned the students indebtedness to the school at the end of the year at about GH¢12,971.30.

Mr Beyuo pleaded with parents to make the school their second home and pay regular visits to the place to encourage and also see to the welfare of their children’s education.

He commended the parents for initiating a number of development projects in the school to complement the efforts of the government.

Mr Beyuo announced that the school would introduce Home Economics and Visual Arts as additional programmes to General Arts and Business.

Mr Thomas Berchie, PTA Chairman of the school, was grateful to the parents for offering the necessary support towards the development of the school.

He said parents have decided to extend electricity to the girls dormitory and also complete the plastering and painting work on the project to make the place more attractive.
