Govt presents laptops to schools in Western Region

Library photoGovernment has presented a total of 2,320 laptops valued at GHc1.16 million to 52 Ghana Education Service accredited senior high schools, technical and vocational institutes in the Western Region.

The presentation, the third under the reviewed policy, would be replicated across the country before the end of the year.

Senior high schools, which offer science programmes would receive 50 pieces each, while other schools would receive 40 pieces each.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at the Fijai Senior High School in Sekondi, the Minister for Science, Technology and Environment, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, warned that the computers were not personal assets.

He said the computers were also not meant for offices for administrative work of the management and should not be used as such.

“The computers are primarily to facilitate teaching and learning by students and teachers,” he said.

The project, which was started in 2010, he said shows the government’s commitment to promote information technology and its development in the country by improving student’s access to information communication technology facilities for science and technology education.

Government, he said, “ regards the move as imperative for the future development through ICT capacity development from the grassroot level.”

“The ministry,  having taken into consideration the need to enhance access and ensure effective utilisation of laptops in ICT development, has currently put priority on equipping the ICT laboratories of SHSs, technical and vocational institutes as part of its reviewed policy in implementing the project,” he said.

Dr Oteng-Adjei said under the scheme, beneficiary schools were required to ensure well-secured ICT centres  with adequate furniture among others to be qualified for the laptops.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr E.K.T. Addo, proposed the setting up of a monitoring team  to inspect the computers from time to time to determine how many of them were in use and how many had broken down or vanished from the system.
