He said the provision of free uniforms and stationery to basic schoolchildren, extension of the school  feeding  programme, provision of infrastructure in senior high schools (SHSs) and the distribution of laptop computers to raise the standard of education had been on course.

The deputy minister was speaking at the 50th anniversary of the Agona Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Senior High School (SHS) at Agona in the Sekyere South District of the Ashanti Region.

The golden jubilee coincided with the 13th speech and prize-giving day of the school on the theme,  “Quality Education: A Shared Responsibility of the Church, Government and other Stakeholders.”

Mr Yaw Adusei explained that every country depended on its quality human resource and that the heavy investment by the government in the educational sector demonstrated the government’s commitment to develop the sector.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Sarfo Kantanka, noted that quality education stimulated creative thinking, developed problem-solving skills and emphasised on the application of knowledge.

He urged the SDA Church to ensure the holistic education of their members, and also admonished students of the school and the youth in general to stay away from drugs, alcoholism, promiscuity, occultism and cyber crimes.

As a lecturer at the Kumasi campus of the University of Education, Winneba, Mr Philip Oti Agyen, who was the Guest Speaker, urged stakeholders in the educational sector to redouble their efforts to creat more opportunities for the youth to access educational opportunities.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Moses Kwaku Addai, disclosed that due to increases in enrolment, the school needed to expand its infrastructure, and appealed to the government to provide the school with a 12-unit classroom block, dormitories, a bus and renovate its access roads.

The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Union Conference (GUC) of the SDA, Pastor Dr Kwanin Boakye, chaired the function, and asked the school to continue its good works.
