Female students overtake males at AMECO congregation

For the first time since its establishment more than 75 years ago, the E.P. College of Education, Amedzofe (AMECO), has admitted more female students than males.

Out of the 216 fresh students admitted by the college last academic year, 114 were females and 102 were males.

The Principal of the college, Dr Dickson Tsey, who announced this at the 15th congregation of the institution, noted that the development was in line with the policy of the college to close the male-female ratio.

Enrolment

He said the college with a current enrolment of 1,076, had also admitted applicants from all the 16 regions in a move to promote cultural integration and cohesion among the students.

The 174 students graduated with Bachelor of Education in Basic Education (Primary and Junior High School) degrees.
Out of the number, seven attained First Class Honours.

They were among the first batch students to graduate with degrees in the colleges of education.

Dr Tsey said in a move to maintain and further raise AMECO’s standard as a citadel to knowledge, the academic board had introduced a new programme in Early Grade Course in the 2021/ 22 academic year.

He gave an assurance that the college had procured the needed facilities for the smooth running of the course and appealed to the government and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to continue supporting the programme with great zeal and resources to sustain it.

Infrastructural needs

The principal touched on the infrastructural needs of the college, and said in the absence of a modern college auditorium, AMECO held official events in the open and that was very disheartening.

Meanwhile, he said, the college was undertaking a 180-capacity two-storey female hostel project, with funding solely from its Internally Generated Fund (IGF).

The project which took off in 2021, and was now about 80 per cent complete would ensure the admission of more female students, the principal added.

Apart from that, Dr Tsey said, an administration block annex had been constructed by the college, by utilising using IGF.

He acknowledged the support from old students of the college in a project to construct a 10-seater modern toilet facility for the female students, saying the project which had reached the roofing and tiling level would be completed soon.

Congratulations

The Ho West District Chief Executive (DCE), Ernest Victor Apau, congratulated the fresh graduates and urged them to work hard in the spirit of patriotism to contribute to progress in the country.

He said Amedzofe, the highest human settlement in Ghana, was a town with strategic location, with first class tourism features.

The AMECO Alumni President, Agbeko Lotsu, urged the fresh graduates to continue to learn and aspire to greater heights in knowledge.
