CODA hands over classroom block to Wawase Basic School

The Coastal Development Authority (CODA) has handed over a gated two-unit kindergarten classroom block to the Agona West Municipal Assembly (AWMA) Basic School at Wawase, a suburb of Agona Swedru in the Central Region.

The new classroom block, which was funded by CODA from the constituency’s share of the one million dollar per constituency fund, is intended to provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils.

Other facilities in the block included a kitchen, dining hall, headmaster’s office, mechanised borehole with overhead storage tank as well as places of convenience.

Crucial need

The Chief Executive Officer of CODA, Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, said the project was lobbied for by the Member of Parliament for the area, Mrs Cynthia Morrison, because of the absence of a proper kindergarten block for the school.

He noted that after a thorough needs assessment of the situation in the school, CODA realised the need to put up the classroom block to ameliorate the plight of the pupils.

He said the project and several others dotted in many communities across the country were in fulfilment of the pledge by President Akufo-Addo to spread development throughout the country through the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP).

Mr Shaib said the authority, since its inception, had executed numerous projects across the coastal belt and would continue to take the lead role towards the growth and development of communities within its operational area.

Solid foundation
Poor state of old block

The Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, Mrs Cynthia Mamle Morrison, noted that she was fully aware of the dilapidated state of the old block, hence her resolve to ensure the construction of a befitting kindergarten block for the school pupils.

She noted that the availability of a proper learning atmosphere for school pupils, particularly at the foundation level, was critical in enhancing academic performance among them, saying “this new block would enable teachers to build in the pupils the needed foundation as they climb the academic ladder”.

“With the construction of the classroom block, both teachers and the pupils would be encouraged to give of their best towards achieving the purpose for which the project was executed,” she said.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Anthony Peany, appealed to the MP and the municipal assembly to immediately redevelop a public toilet close to the school into a modern one since the pungent smell from the toilet posed health risk to the teachers and pupils.

The Agona West Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Joseph Kingsley Akwaboah, stated that a good foundation was very important in the lives of every pupil at the basic level.
