Known as the Corporate Social Education Fund (CSEF), the fund is geared towards supporting the educational needs of brilliant, needy students of two constituencies, Trobo and Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region (GAR).

Board of trustees

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the GWMA, Mr Sam Atukwei, last Monday inaugurated a seven-member board of trustees to manage the fund.

The board is chaired by a Retired Chief Director of the Civil Service, Mr Edwin Barnes, and supported by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Trobo Constituency, Mr Moses Anim; the MP for Amasaman, Mr Emmanuel N. O. Laryea, and the Municipal Director of Education, Mr Addo Dankwa Akuffo.

The rest are the Chief Imam for Amasaman, Alhaji Hamidu Bukari Kabore; a member of the municipal assembly, Ms Beatrice Agbalenyo; the budget officer of the assembly, Mr Anthony Hugh Cobbina, and Mr John Coffie, member.

Ensure transparency

Mr Atukwei entreated the board to ensure transparency in its duty.

According to him, a lot of children in the municipality were out of school as a result of many obstacles they faced, including  poverty, and “I believe we owe it a duty to address that.”

“To identify such students and support them financially and materially to remain in school for them to achieve their dreams, we need to inaugurate this board.

In 2015, we were best in the GAR Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as against 11th the previous year and this is not a mean achievement,” Mr Atukwei explained.

He, therefore, urged members  to mobilise funds from corporate and social organisations, as well as public-spirited individuals to sustain the initiative.

Commendation

For his part, Mr Barnes commended the assembly for the initiative and assured them to be diligent in the discharge of their duty.

He said the board would develop guidelines to ensure a level playing field for all prospective applicants.

“ The assembly has provided a seed capital, but I am sure the demand on the scheme will be more, hence we will invest the money to be able to address our challenges,’’ he said.
