Enchi College of Education (ENCHICO) in the Aowin District in the Western Region has held its annual graduation ceremony for the 2015/2016 Diploma in Basic Education students at the auditorium of the college, during which awards were presented to graduates who excelled in various fields.

The over 17 category of awards saw the overall best graduating student who attained first class out of 352 students sweeping three of the awards at the 8th graduation ceremony, on the theme: “Delivery of quality education in Ghana; the role of the trained teacher.”

Delivering her welcome address, the Principal of the college, Madam Victoria Aidoo, announced that there had been remarkable improvement in the school’s performances with respect to teaching and learning, outreach for teacher development, projects and programmes, as well as admissions.

She added that academic work on campus had improved tremendously as tutors now adopted modern approaches to teaching and learning and with the flavour of information communication technology (ICT); the T-Tel teaching model has brought to the fore new pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning which have been adopted by both tutors and students teachers.

Gratitude

Madam Aidoo expressed gratitude to the government for the payment of outstanding feeding fees to schools at the various levels. She said the payment of the arrears was timely, as it bailed the schools out of their high levels of indebtedness. She appealed to the government to settle the outstanding feeding fees of the second semester of the 2016/17 academic year and restore the students’ allowances as promised by the government which is supposed to start next academic year.

She also lamented some of the challenges facing the college such as huge outstanding electricity bills, deplorable roads and pavements, and appealed to the government, agencies, institutions and individuals to come to the rescue of the college.

In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Madam Eugenia Gifty Kusi, the Western Regional Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie, said education was the backbone of development and the government was, therefore, committed to ensuring that the learning needs of all young people and adults were met

The Special Guest of Honour Professor Evans Kofi Davis, Dean, School of Educational Development and Outreach, University of Cape Coast, described the theme for the ceremony as most appropriate, stressing that quality education was important for socio-economic development.
