Challenging Heights trains students

A graduation ceremony has been held for 63 students who  have completed a four-month intensive computer and entrepreneurship training organised by Challenging Heights, a Ghanaian child’s rights non-governmental organisation (NGO), at its offices in Winneba.

Drawn from Winneba and its surrounding communities, the beneficiaries were trained in computer hardware, software, leadership and entrepreneurship to equip them with employable and managerial skills that would enable them to set up their businesses.

Graduation

At the short graduation ceremony, the Advocacy Manager of Challenging Heights, Mr David Kofi Awusi, said the training formed part of his outfit’s Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP) aimed at equipping the youth with the needed skills that would help them to secure jobs, as well as enable them to set up their own sole proprietorship businesses.

He stated that the goal of the NGO was to train about 230 young people by the end of December and added that so far about 170 had already been trained, with the hope that the estimated target would be achieved by the end of the year.

He mentioned that the YEP was practical and career-oriented, which involved getting students to develop personal business plans, as well as provide them with employment linkages by identifying employment opportunities for them to take advantage of.

 Advice to beneficiaries

He advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the skills acquired to establish their private enterprises, since it was not possible for the government alone to provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the country.

He said the beneficiaries would be closely monitored and supported so that the knowledge they had acquired would be used for the benefit of the society, adding, “you are privileged to benefit from the training and you must put the skills to good use so as to improve your living standards.”

Mr Awusi called on the Youth Employment Agency  to streamline the youth employment programme by paying their allowances promptly to make the programme attractive to the youth.
