Started early last month and expected to end on February 2, 2017, the training forms part of the AGA’s core values of its 2016 community investment programme to resource the youth in communities around the Obuasi Mine in skills training.

The AGA has, through its community investment programme, trained over 500 apprentices in the last decade.

At a ceremony to mark the commencement of the programme at Obuasi, the Vice-President of the AGA (Sustainability), Mr Kelepile Dintwe, said AGA was guided by its core values to improve the living conditions of the people living in the catchment communities.

Equipping the youth

He said the training was aimed at equipping the youth with practical training skills in engineering to open various employment opportunities for members in their catchment communities to enhance their livelihoods.

He asked the apprentices to make good use of the opportunity offered them.

The Sustainability Manager of AGA, Obuasi Mine, Nana Ampofo Bekoe, announced that the 20 youth, four each from Binsere, New Dokyiwaa, Anyinam, Sanso and Bidiem, would be issued with intermediate certificates in Auto-electricals, Welding and Fabrication.

Learning kits

He said the apprentices had been given safety boots, overalls and related learning kits, indicating that $20,000 would be spent throughout the  three-month training programme.

The Training Co-ordinator, Mr Opare Baidoo, took the apprentices on a guided tour of the engineering training centre to introduce them to the job.

The Krontihene of New Edubiase, Nana Asirifi Asare II, who represented the traditional authority, commended AGA for the initiative to assist the youth.
