Aburi Girls SHS wins Young Debaters competition

A second-year student of the Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, Miss Aniela Naa Adorkor Allotey, on Thursday, won the 2014 national finals of the Young Debaters competition in Accra.

Miss Allotey won the competition with her spectacular and eloquent presentation on the topic ‘Ideas are Our Greatest Weapon.’

For her prize, Miss Allotey received a gold medal, a return ticket to London to represent Ghana at the 33rd International Public Speaking Competition.

The Young Educators Foundation (YEF),  a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that promotes literacy in Ghana, which hosted the programme, is also the organisers of the Spelling Bee competition.

It was sponsored by Indomie Instant Noodles and supported by Vodafone Ghana and Mayan Books Company which donated dictionaries to the students.

Miss Jade Kankam-Nantwi of SOS SHS was the first runner-up and the second runner-up went to Master Samuel Effah Amponsah of Presbyterian Senior High School. They got silver and bronze medals and textbooks.

The 18 student debaters, who came from schools in the Eastern Region, Tema and Accra, received certificates of participation while coaches for the debaters received Vodafone Webbox for their schools.

Madam Eugenia Tachie-Menson, the Country Director of the YEF, told the GNA that public speaking was not an easy task and, so it was prudent to build the confidence of the students at early stages.

She said the debates allowed the students to develop critical thinking and communication skills and also gave them the chance to meet, exchange and form friendships in other countries.
