2019 Edition of National Science and Math Quiz launched

Organisers of the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ), Primetime Limited, launched the 2019 edition of the National Championship in Accra on Tuesday, June 11.

This year's NSMQ, which is the 26th edition, will be competed by 135 schools that qualified from all parts of the country, and out of this number, 108 are entering the competition as winners from the regional championships, while the remaining 27 are quarterfinalists from the 2018 edition.

Also, out of the 135 schools, six, namely the Frafraha Community SHS, the Kwabeng Anglican, the Hark Mt. Sinai, Adaklu, Vakpo and the Amanten SHSs, will be competing at the national level for the first time.

The breakdown is: Ashanti, 26 schools, Western 11, Northern nine, Volta, 18 and Upper West, six schools. The rest are, Five from the Upper East, Brong Ahafo, 13, Eastern 19, with Greater Accra and the Central regions featuring 13 and 15 schools respectively.

According to information from the organisers, the championship is set to begin with 108 regional champions at the preliminary stage from June 17 to June 22, while the remaining 27 schools will join the competition at the one-eight stage, which is also scheduled for June 24 to July 3.

Also, the quarter-finals, semi-finals and grand finale have been slated for July 4-6, July 8 and July 11, respectively.

Prizes

Aside the trophy, the winning school will take home a cash prize of GH¢40, 000. In addition to this, GH¢15, 000 would be given to teacher who trains the students and his colleagues, whiles another GH¢15,000 would also be given to the three contestants who represent the winning school. They will also receive certificates.

A new trophy, made of bronze, was unveiled and to win it for keeps, a school has to win the championship for three times.

However, a miniature trophy will be given to the winning school to signify its victory in the competition.

The second-placed school will also receive GH¢30, 000. In addition to this, the lead trainer and his team of trainee teachers will receive GH¢10,000 and the contestants will also receive GH¢10,000.

The third-placed school will be given GH₵20,000, the training team will receive GH₵5,000 and the contestant will go home with certificates and GH¢5,000.

Again, all semifinalist schools will each receive GH¢5,000, while the training team will receive GH¢2,500, and the contestants GH¢2,500 and certificates of participation.

All the prize are being sponsored by the Ghana Education Service.

For this year, the winners, together with their trainee teacher, will go on an all-expense paid trip to Nairobi and Dubai, courtesy the Adansi Travels and Kenyan Airways from August 1-10, 2019.

Delivering the keynote address at the launch, the Deputy Director of the GES in charge Access and Quality, Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, said the nation’s constant attention on the NSMQ signified the importance attached to the subjects, pointing out that the NSMQ remained critical in the nation's effort to increase science and math enrolment at the various levels of education in the country.

The Director of Innovation at the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mrs Adelaide Asante, for her part, said for Ghana to have a bright future in the field of innovation, the Ministry of Education, with support of stakeholders need to intensify efforts to produce scientists who would work in support of the country’s development.

The Managing Director of Primetime Limited, Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare, commended schools, teachers, students and sponsors for their contributions to the success of the competition over the years.
