Together, they received 5,440 laptops, valued at GH¢2.72 million.

Schools that offer science as a programme received 50 laptops each, while the others were given 40 each.

The laptops were provided under the government’s programme of distributing free laptops to second-cycle institutions throughout the country by the end of the year.

The ceremony took place at the Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra last Monday.

The initiative, which started three years ago, demonstrates the government’s commitment to promote information technology and its development in Ghana by improving students’ access to information and communications technology (ICT) facilities.

Making the presentation on behalf of the government, the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, said the beneficiary schools were required to have well-secured ICT centres with adequate furniture.

That, he said, the schools satisfied, hence the presentation.

“It is internationally accepted that no country can ever eradicate poverty without quality education for all,” he said.

He said in view of that the government was dedicated to the provision of educational systems and facilities, adding that one project earmarked to achieve that goal was the Better Ghana Agenda ICT project.

He stressed that the laptops were not for the teachers and advised the students to take good care of them.

For his part, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Djanmah Vanderpuye, said since the world was a global village, it behoved every Ghanaian to embrace ICT to make the country’s human resource competitive on the global market.

He appealed to the teachers to give their best by teaching the students well.

Speaking on behalf of the recipient schools, the Headmistress of the Labone SHS, Mrs Mary Amankwaah, promised that the schools would use the laptops for the intended purpose.

She pledged that they would ensure that the laptops were properly maintained to serve the present and future generations of students.
