I love Ghana! When we face tough times we make them easy by looking at the lighter side of issues. For example, one of the most serious issues in relationship is impotence, the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse.
Ghanaians describe an impotent as a man in a freezer or a man whose gun has been seized by the government. The commonest description, however, is a man who has lights off.
Impotence or erectile dysfunction affects men of all ages. One of every 10 men you meet on the street has light off by the likelihood increases with age.
For example, it is 30 per cent by men by age 40 and 65 per cent by age 65. Statistics in Ghana are scanty because by our tradition and culture, any talk about sex is a taboo.
It is, however, a fact that impotence is fast increasing in Ghana. Cases coming in range from men in their 30s and above.
Causes of lights off
The causes of lights off may be physical, physiological or mental. Physical causes include breakdown or damage to the tissues in the brain, spinal cord and penis, which control the sequence of events leading to erection.
Impotence may also be a symptom of diseases like diabetes and kidney failure. Some medications for medical problems like high blood pressure may inhibit erection.
Physiological problems include hormonal imbalance.
Mental problems include eagerness, bitterness, guilt and depression. Others include fatigue, past failures and unmet expectations.
For example, the greatest emotional need of a man is what he achieves at work. A man in failing business may be impotent.
Today, economic pressure in Ghana has contributed greatly to our rising impotent cases.
It is also known that women contribute to make their men impotent. A wife’s lack of sexual response, constant nagging or dominance breaks down a man’s self-esteem and makes him impotent.
You must also appreciate that men are motivated by attractive lovers. Women who dress shabbily depress their men and make them impotent. Many cases come in from men who can’t perform at home but do very well outside. They are domestically impotent!
Effects of lights off
Sex is critical to man’s sense of well-being. He needs it for pleasure, reassurance and ego enhancement ,which improves all areas of his life.
Sex is the deepest form of communication. When a man loves a woman, the easiest way he expresses it is through sex.
Accumulation of sexual fluid urges a man to have sex as often as possible. The sex hormone, testosterone, is 20 more concentrated in a man than in a woman. A man without sex for a day is like a woman without sex for 20!
A man, therefore, needs sex to fulfill his sexual drive, manhood and competency. Some Ghanaian men, therefore, see impotence as sentence of death by hanging and some have actually committed suicide because they are impotent.
When you have lights off
The good news is that most cases of impotence can be treated because they are caused by poor state of mind. A positive attitude and good lifestyle are important ways of treating impotence.
Seek counselling or medical attention.
What you must not do is to self-medicate. Most of the concoctions and medications on the market are actually toxic. They may worsen your condition and predispose you to many diseases.
A woman must be cooperative and understanding.
Avoid putting pressure on your man to ‘perform or else.’ You must also avoid ridicule because it is a murder weapon. Never discuss your man’s condition with friends or relatives.
When everything fails, come to terms with your situation. You may have very Erotic Non-Insertive Sex (VENIS) through massaging, manual and oral genital stimulation.
There are about 32 million impotent men in the US but life goes on. You may fail in sex but never fall out of love.
