The Minister of Tourism, Abla Dzifa Gomashie recently paid a working visit to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) to engage with management and technical staff on matters aimed at preserving and sustainably managing the country’s historic forts and castles.
The forts and castles, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, stand as enduring symbols of the country's rich history and its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Discussions centred on key recommendations arising from previous assessments of the forts and castles by UNESCO, International Council on Monuments and Sites(ICOMOS) and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).
Particular attention was given to identifying priority interventions and developing a phased approach to implementing conservation projects across the various heritage sites.
The minister urged staff of the GMMB to remain proactive and committed to their responsibilities.
She encouraged them to adopt a positive attitude towards work and to seek support whenever necessary to ensure that critical projects are implemented efficiently.
Officials of the GMMB reaffirmed the board's commitment to safeguarding the country's cultural heritage.
