Speaking in an interview with GraphicOnline, DO1 Korsah highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures when using gas cylinders.

One of the key tips emphasized by DO1 Korsah is the need to retire gas cylinders after 10 years of use. Beyond this period, gas cylinders may not withstand pressure tests, making them potentially dangerous. He said it is crucial for users to replace their gas cylinders with newer ones to ensure safety.

The presence of deposits in a gas cylinder is another important factor to consider. DO1 Korsah cautioned that if an empty cylinder produces a rattling sound when shaken, it may indicate the presence of deposits and internal rust. In such cases, he said it is advisable to discontinue using the cylinder and seek a replacement.

He also mentioned that maintaining a safe distance between the gas cylinder and the burner is vital. DO1 Korsah said placing the cylinder too close to a burner can increase the risk of accidents and encouraged users to maintain proper spacing to prevent any potential fire hazards.

Transporting gas cylinders safely is equally crucial. DO1 Korsah advised individuals to secure gas cylinders properly during transport to avoid accidents that could lead to leaks or explosions. Following proper guidelines and ensuring adequate safety measures are in place can minimize risks during transportation.

In the event of suspected gas leaks, DO1 Korsah urged the public to avoid turning on switches or any potential sources of ignition. Promptly reporting suspected leaks to the appropriate authorities will enable swift action to mitigate the risks.

Lastly, DO1 Korsah emphasized the importance of using gas cylinders outdoors whenever possible. Keeping gas cylinders outside when in use can reduce the risk of gas leaks accumulating indoors, thus minimizing potential hazards.

The safety tips provided by DO1 Michael Ato Korsah serve as a valuable reminder for individuals using gas cylinders in Ghana. Adhering to these guidelines will contribute to a safer environment and significantly reduce the occurrence of gas-related accidents. The Ghana National Fire Service continues to educate the public on best practices to ensure the well-being and safety of all citizens.
