Visually altered proportions

There are several effects the proportions of a space or room can have on occupants. When such impacts are felt, people desire some changes be made, but usually already built homes cannot have proportions changed so easily.

However, there are many ways of visually changing the proportions of a room.

For example:

• When a ceiling is too-high, painting it a darker colour than the walls can visually lower the ceiling.

The dark colour may be brought about 30cm or one foot down on the walls to further reduce the visual height of the ceiling.

• When there is a  long tunnel-feeling in a corridor, the wall at the end of a long, narrow corridor or room may be painted a bright colour  to make it appear closer.

Another way is to fix large mirrors on one or both of the side walls to increase the visual width.

There are many ways to change the appearance of a room’s proportions.

Very good designers and decorators can think of many other ways to alter the appearance of proportions without physically changing them.

For instance, a usual treatment in a bedroom is to place the bed with headboard against a wall between two windows. But when there is a very large bedroom and the user/users would rather have a cozier appeal then the usual treatment mentioned earlier would not be suitable for such an appeal.

However, dividing or breaking up the bedroom into two or more areas may make it much cozier.

For example having the larger bedroom divided into a bed area and a sitting area, with partitions of room dividers or railings or screens to further break up the room.

Implementing this idea provides the homeuser or designer an opportunity to use their creativity and ingenuity to change the proportions of a too-large room by just dividing it into parts.

Altering the proportions of a room may involve altering the norms and oftentimes some of the principles of design.

Always remember that no piece of furniture has to be in one established place every time.

Freeing yourself from such set ideas, will end up with better solutions for rooms or spaces with problematic proportions.

Now, move away from the entrenched traditions, free your mind, free your space, do something innovative.

If you don’t succeed with one arrangement, try another. Besides, you can or may call for help from a designer or decorator.
