Look elegant with a beautiful skin

The skin is truly an important part of the body and aside playing its role of protecting the body, a balanced skin is a visible indicator of good health. A healthy Black skin can withstand the harsh rays of the sun.

If there is one thing that women really care about, it is their skin. Wearing that ‘hot’ cute dress, a woman does not only want to show how elegant she looks but how beautiful her skin is glowing.

When it comes to judging the physical beauty of women, they do not overlook their healthy, fresh, smooth and a younger-looking beautiful skin.

Keep skin fresh

To keep their skin “alive” and fresh, most women cannot do without their body lotion or creams. According to a Cosmetologist, Mrs Emma Yankey, while cream products have oil-based content, body lotions are made up of a mixture of oil and water.

The different types of body cream and body lotion have their own special composition and their own special set of benefits. Body creams and body lotions are both used to prevent dry, cracked skin and keep the skin supple and moisturised. Lotions and creams contain both an oily agent, or phase, and a watery agent, which help to replenish oil in the skin and protect the skin against loss of moisture.

Knowing your skin type

In applying these products, it is very important to take into consideration the content of the product and the skin type.

Mrs Yankey said it was very important for women to take into consideration their skin type before purchasing or applying a body cream or lotion.

She explained that there were four skin types, which were normal, oily, dry and a combination of the last two. The dry skin type does not have natural moisturiser and sometimes causes the skin to crack, develop wrinkles and an uneven pigmentation.

The oily skin, on the other hand, produces excessive oil, and applying creams or lotion is sometimes an option. Mrs Yankey, who is also a lecturer at the 2nd Image Hair and Beauty Clinic, said oily skin type caused pimples.

She further explained that the normal skin type was balanced, has even pigmentation and was smooth while the combination skin type had excess of either the dry or oily skin type.

She recommended that dry skinned persons used creams which were oil-based  instead of lotions which dries on the skin quickly.

The skin and ageing

In taking care of the skin, one factor which is a headache for most women is ageing which caused the skin to wrinkle and shows ‘lines’ on the face.

The cosmetologist said although there were some skin products to temporarily halt the ‘lines’ and wrinkles on the skin of old people, it could not treat or repair them permanently.

Explaining what happened to the skin when one is growing, she said some natural chemicals such as keratin and melanin which protects the skin reduces in production.

“You may have noticed the older you get, the drier your skin becomes. As we age, the skin suffers a slowdown in oil production and cell turnover,” she stated.

The melanin produces the black pigment to protect the black skin and the keratin holds the skin firmly, but as we grow, the production of these chemicals reduces and makes the skin soft”.

She said the type of body cream or lotion one uses, tended to have a lot of effects on the skin. While some contained nutritious vitamins needed for the skin, others also contained chemicals which were harmful to the skin.

“Some of the creams and lotions contain harsh ingredients such as mercury and hydroquinone which could cause damage to the skin. Some of them cause the skin to dry up while others damage the skin permanently,” Mrs Yankey stated

Keeping the skin healthy

There are natural ways of keeping the skin healthy, fresh and beautiful and that is by living a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a beautiful, healthy and firm skin, Mrs Yankey recommended eating vegetables, fruits and drinking a lot of water; exercising, sleeping well.

She advised women to know their skin type by visiting skin specialists or taking a critical study of their skin to inform them about the products that they had to use on their skin.
