Agotime marks Kente festival

 Palanquin artistry took the centre stage at the 20th celebration of Agbamevorza or Kente festival of the people of Agotime traditional area in the Volta Region last weekend.

It created a street carnival that caused human and traffic jam along the Aflao –Ho highway as some chiefs resplendent in Kente danced in their palanquins to the admiration of a large crowd of celebrants.

 

Chiefs who rode in palanquins were, the War Lord of Agotime, Nene Akoto Sah VII, chief of Agotime Akpokope, Nene Dadze III and chief of Kpetoe, Nene Alietso Korsorku III.

Two Swiss nationals resident in the United States of America were also outdoored at the durbar after their enstoolment as Nene Dunenyo I and Manye Zevideka I.

The event was celebrated under the theme, “Preserving Kente for Eco-Tourism Development” with the Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia as guest of honour and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Dzifa Gomashie as a special guest.

The Konor of Agotime, Nene Nuer Keteku III called for the preservation of Kente by the establishment of a model academy to transfer knowledge and skills to younger generations.

This is because it had been observed that the few master craftsmen or master weavers would soon pass away together with their knowledge and skills on the Kente industry.
