Don’t fall for a romance scam

The consequences are not only individual losses but broader social harms that deserve urgent attention.
Scammers are skilled social engineers. They build believable personas and use patient, persistent grooming to gain trust. Unlike quick cons that rely on pressure and surprise, romance scams often unfold over weeks or months.

Perpetrators exchange messages that mirror empathy, share seemingly intimate details and create emotional milestones—a birthday message, a confession of love, plans for the future. Once attachment is established, the request changes: a sudden medical emergency, a business opportunity or travel logistics require money. Victims, already emotionally invested, often comply.

The financial costs are stark. Victims report losing from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the damage goes beyond money. People who fall prey to romance scams often experience shame, social isolation and lasting distrust, which can ripple through families and communities. In Ghana, where remittances and informal lending are common, a single fraud loss can push households into debt and undermine local safety nets.

Technology and globalisation make these scams easier to run and harder to trace. For this reason, The Mirror believes public education is equally crucial. Awareness campaigns should teach people how scams typically progress: the speed at which emotions are declared, requests for secrecy, sudden financial needs and reluctance to meet in person or use video calls.
Families and friends also play a key role: open conversations about online relationships reduce stigma and make it easier for victims to seek help without shame.

Romance should be a source of joy and companionship, not a vector for exploitation.
